Trainer

I believe it is crucial that staff reflect on seeing the perspective of a person with a disability to truly be ‘person-centred’ in their approach.

I am available to provide training to support workers and organisations around assisting to live a valued life for people with disabilities, responding to behaviors of concern, sensory and movement needs, and the importance of communication strategies.

I am also available to provide training in Facilitated Communication Training (FCT) to support workers, family members, and other interested professionals – whether beginner or advanced. This includes supporting you to complete competency-based training in FCT from Beginner through to Advanced level. Rodney provides training to family members, support workers, and allied health professionals.

I have the pleasure and honour of knowing and co-presenting with Rosemary Crossley and the late Anne McDonald - both pioneers of FCT in Australia and fierce advocates for people without speech.
As Anne said:

Communication falls into the same category as food, drink and shelter…it is essential for life. Without communication, life becomes worthless”.

Consultant

Over the years, I have provided consultancy services to various groups and organisations on the lived experience of Autism, facilitated communication and advocating for the human rights and the communication needs of people with disability.

I have been a long-time consultant for the Queensland Centre for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (QCIDD) providing advice and education to the health professions to increase awareness and improve health outcomes of people with disability.

I am currently a consultant for Mamre Association, providing advice to families on creating a rich, meaningful life.

Other projects for Rodney have included:

  • Consulting and travelled with Pave the Way on the importance of readiness for the NDIS, valued roles and person-centred planning.

  • Consulting with Queensland Advocacy Incorporated (QAI) on the human rights of people with disability who present with Behaviours of Concern.

  • Consulting with the Department of Communities (Disability Services) on various projects including:

  • Joint collaboration with University of Southern Queensland (USQ) and University of Queensland in producing academic reports focusing on improving outcomes for facilitated communication.

  • Joint collaborating with Anne Donnellan and Martha Leary, world experts in sensory/movement differences.
